Our journal-based learning programme offers educational activities on selected articles published in Echo Research and Practice. To begin, please register.
This online-only service is currently free to use following registration. Once you have registered, please log in to the portal where you can browse activities by subject area, keep track of progress, and download certificates for all your completed activities. Two Adult Re-Accreditation Credits from the British Society of Echocardiography are available upon successful completion of each activity within 6 months of its publication on the site.

The primary audience for these activities is sonographers, clinicians-in-training, nurses and other allied health professionals practising echocardiography. The activities will also be of interest to physicians, researchers and/or other healthcare professionals working in echocardiography or in any of its related disciplines.
How to participate
First, visit our journal-based learning portal registration page. Following free registration, log in to the portal at any time to complete unlimited activities for free. Having read and reflected upon a given journal article, participants will need to answer all multiple-choice questions correctly before being able to download their certificate of completion.
Any person involved in the journal-based learning programme is required to disclose any potential conflict of interest, including current or recent financial relationships with any commercial entity whose products or services are contained in the content. Bioscientifica staff and freelancers working on the journal-based learning programme reported no conflict of interest. Article authors' declarations are stated in each journal article and journal editors' declarations are listed in the journal's Disclosure Policy.
The programme does not receive any financial support from any commercial organisation.
How do I get started?
When you first log in you will see all available courses listed in the ‘Available Courses’ tab. They are listed with the most recently-added at the top. Note there may be a ‘+’ icon at the end of the list which you can expand to reveal more courses. You can browse the courses available or use the ‘Filter By Competency’ function (comprising a drop-down list) to check if there are any courses available in your topics of interest.
How do I find courses I might be interested in?
You may see courses listed under three tabs (‘My Courses’, ‘Recommended’ and ‘Available Courses’), depending on whether you have chosen any courses yet. You can browse down the list on each tab in order to see the courses available - note there may be a ‘+’ icon at the end of any list which you can expand to reveal more courses. You can also utilise the ‘Filter By Competency’ function (comprising a drop-down list) which will show you courses available in your topics of interest on each of the three tabs. Note the search function in the main horizontal menu bar will only return results for courses listed in the ‘My Courses’ tab.
I have found a course I’m interested in – how do I select it?
Click on the course title or ‘Add’ from the main training menu (found under the course description) and you will be taken to the course description page. Click ‘Add Course’ and the course will be added to your ‘My Courses’ tab on your main training menu. The courses will be listed with your most recently-accessed at the top - note there may be a ‘+’ icon at the end of any list which you can expand to reveal more courses.
What are ‘recommended’ courses?
Once you have chosen to take a course, the ‘Recommended’ tab on the main training menu will populate with any other available courses in similar topic areas. How do I begin a course?
Either click on the course title or click on 'Launch' under the course description from your main training menu. The course description page will load, along with a list of modules included within the course. The modules can be required or optional: required modules will show with a progress bar on the right-hand side, whereas optional modules will show 'OPTIONAL' text. Click on a module to begin it. Once you have completed it, return to the course page where you can continue with any other modules. Once you have completed any required modules and any optional modules you wish to complete, click on ‘Course Survey’ (found above the listed modules on the course description page). The survey must be completed before you are returned to the course description page where you will see a ‘Print Certificate’ button (found above the listed modules on the course description page).
How many times can I take each module assessment?
Unlimited attempts are permitted, unless otherwise stated. You will have the opportunity to review and finalise your answers before you submit them to be scored.
How do I get my certificate?
Once you have completed all required modules and taken the course survey, a ‘Print Certificate’ button will appear at the top of the modules list on the course description page. You can return and print your certificate at any time via the ‘E-Transcript’ (certificate) icon in the main horizontal menu bar, to the left of the search box.
I have finished a course but it’s not showing as complete – why?
As well as completing any required modules you will also need to complete the course survey before you have successfully completed the course and you can access your certificate. Once you have completed any required modules, the ‘Course Survey’ button (and then the ‘Print Certificate’ button) will show at the top of the modules list on each course description page.
Can I keep a record of what courses I’ve taken?
Your learning record can be found via the ‘E-Transcript’ (certificate) icon in the main horizontal menu bar, to the left of the search box. From here, you can view which courses you have taken, on what date and what your score was, and download and/or print your certificates.
Can I start a course and finish it later?
You can exit a module at any time (click ‘Exit Module Assessment’ if you’re in the assessment portion) and choose to return to complete it later. The course will show on your training menu with an incomplete progress bar alongside it until you return and successfully complete it.
Can I make notes on the courses?
You can make (and edit) notes on any course module by clicking on the ‘Notes’ (notepad) icon in the main horizontal menu bar whilst viewing the module. You can access your notes at any time from your main training menu by clicking on the ‘Notes’ (notepad) icon in the main horizontal menu bar.
What are reflection modules?
Each course has a reflection module, which is usually optional to complete, containing prompts for you to record any development in your knowledge/skills and any changes you may make to your daily practice as a result of completing a course. Once you have completed a reflection module, you can view, edit or download it at any time from the ‘Tools/Project Documents’ (hammer/wrench) icon in the main horizontal menu bar.
What do the icons in the main horizontal menu bar mean?
You can access these icons, to the left of the search box, at any time. From left to right: FAQs (speech bubble/question mark) – any course-specific FAQs (rather than these general FAQs). Tools/Project Documents (hammer/wrench) – view, edit or download any entries you made for any of the reflection modules. Notes (notepad) – view, edit or download any notes you made whilst in any module. Profile (portrait) – view or update your profile information. E-Transcript (certificate) – view which courses you have taken, on what date and what your score was, and download and/or print your certificates.
How much does it cost to take courses?
There is currently no charge to undertake any courses, at least for an initial trial period.
Are the courses accredited?
The British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) awards two credits for courses completed within 6 months of their being made live. After this time period the courses are made available as a learning resource only.
How do I update my profile?
You can edit your profile information, including topics of interest, at any time via the ‘Profile’ (portrait) icon in the main horizontal menu bar.
How do I hear about new courses?
Unless you opt out, we will email you every time a course in your topic of interest becomes available. You can keep your topics of interest up-to-date via the ‘Profile’ (portrait) icon in the main horizontal menu bar, where you can also choose to unsubscribe from this alerting service.
How do I opt out of new course email alerts?
You can opt out of new course email alerts via the ‘Profile’ (portrait) icon in the main horizontal menu bar, but please check back regularly to see what new courses have become available.
How do I tell other people about courses?
Each course description page has a ‘SHARE’ button, allowing you to share course details with colleagues by myriad formats including email, Facebook and Twitter.
What browsers does the site support?
Latest supported browser versions are Internet Explorer 9, Safari 5, Firefox v15 and Chrome v22. The site is mobile compatible for iOS version 4+ and Android 2.3+.
